Luminary Level Up and Town Vendors
Blacksmith, Armorer, Arcanist, and Chef — plus mining and fishing loops that fuel OpenZone power.
Town is Luminary’s power engine. Refractive Entertainment spreads vertical progression across four vendors — Blacksmith, Armorer, Arcanist, and Chef — fed by combat loot, mining nodes, and fishing spots scattered through the OpenZone. Understanding who to pay first prevents the classic ARPG trap: clearing Liberate Towers attempts with under-upgraded gear because ore sat unused in your inventory. This guide complements How to Play Luminary economic loop with purchase priorities by phase.
Vendor overview
Blacksmith
Upgrades Sword and Shield, Bow, and Magic Glove tiers. Weapon damage spikes unlock new combo breakpoints against elite break bars — see Combat Basics for when damage types matter. Early rule: max one weapon line before touching the others unless a encounter hard-counters your primary.
Armorer
Handles helmets, chest, legs, and accessory defenses. If trash mobs delete your health bar, Armorer fixes the problem faster than leveling in a hot zone. Pair defensive upgrades with Sword and Shield practice blocks for maximum value.
Arcanist
Sells skill upgrades, reagents, and magical utilities. Not every skill is mandatory; buy interrupts and mobility first for Tower interiors. Co-op groups should split Arcanist shopping — one player focuses break-bar spells, another sustain cleanses — to cover more ground per town visit.
Chef
Converts fish, crops, and hunted drops into meals granting timed buffs. Chef output is the cheapest power spike for scheduled hard content. Always eat before Tower pulls and endgame Tier farms in Hall of Heroes and Endgame.
Mining loop
Mining nodes appear along cliffs, cave mouths, and post-camp clear areas. Carry a pickaxe equivalent from starter kit — no separate class required. Efficient mining route:
- Mark nodes during camp returns from Demo Walkthrough paths.
- Mine after liberating regional Towers when patrol density drops.
- Deposit ore before combat if inventory fills — lost ore runs hurt more than lost trash loot.
Ore feeds Blacksmith and Armorer primarily. If both demand the same rare ingot, prioritize whichever fixes your last death reason: damage floor versus survivability ceiling.
Fishing loop
Shorelines and pier spots near town offer lower-risk gathering. Fish feed Chef recipes that boost stamina regen, elemental resist, or crit windows depending on recipe tier. Fishing suits solo wind-down sessions or co-op players waiting for friends to drop in — progression continues without burning combat potions.
Early Access day one map size is about half the final two-kilometer-square OpenZone; fishing holes you learn now remain valid routes when new regions open.
Leveling without mindless grinding
Luminary levels through quest flags, camp clears, Tower liberations, and Life Tree rescues — not infinite kill farming in one spot. If your level lags your gear, you are probably skipping objectives. If your gear lags your level, you are hoarding materials. Fix mismatches at vendors before blaming weapon choice.
Shared solo and co-op progression means town upgrades persist when friends join or leave. Hosts should announce vendor goals so guests contribute gathered fish or ore instead of selling remotely by habit from other ARPGs.
Early Access spending order
Phase 1 — First region
- Blacksmith: primary weapon +1
- Chef: one general-purpose meal recipe
- Armorer: chest or helmet upgrade
- Arcanist: one interrupt or mobility skill
Phase 2 — Pre-first Tower
- Clear linked camps (Liberate Towers)
- Blacksmith: primary weapon +2 if ore allows
- Chef: meal tuned to Tower damage type if known
- Armorer: close weakest defense slot
Phase 3 — Mid map
- Secondary weapon upgrade for swap flexibility
- Arcanist utility for co-op support
- Stockpile ore for post-endboss Tier prep in Hall of Heroes and Endgame
Co-op town etiquette
- Deposit communal materials to host world if that is your agreement.
- Craft Chef meals for the group before outbound travel.
- Announce Arcanist purchases that enable combos — e.g., freeze setup for Bow finishers.
- Do not upgrade all three weapons simultaneously unless everyone agrees on shared DPS targets.
Demo vendor limits
The free demo introduces all four vendors but may cap recipe tiers below Early Access maximums. Use demo time to learn UI and ingredient sources, not to min-max perfect endgame bis. Transition notes live in Getting Started for the August 11, 2026 launch at $19.99.
When to leave town
You are ready to re-enter the OpenZone when:
- Primary weapon matches regional enemy level.
- You carry at least one Chef buff food.
- Potions and Arcanist reagents fill consumable slots.
- Co-op roles are assigned per How to Play Luminary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Luminary questions.
Which town vendor should I upgrade first?
Upgrade your primary weapon at the Blacksmith first, then buy a Chef meal recipe. Add Armorer pieces if you die too quickly to trash mobs.
What do mining and fishing provide?
Mining yields ore for Blacksmith and Armorer upgrades. Fishing supplies ingredients for Chef meals that boost your next combat run.
Do town upgrades persist in co-op?
Yes. Town vendor progress and character upgrades share between solo play and online co-op with up to three players.
Should I upgrade all three weapons equally?
No. Focus one weapon line early, then add a secondary swap weapon mid-game for flexibility in Tower and Tier content.
Are Chef buffs worth the gathering time?
Yes. Meals are the most efficient short-term power boost for Tower attempts and difficult camp clears.
